Geraldine Lavin is a director of 3rd i Ltd, a boutique consultancy specialising in providing strategic direction, training and facilitation services for SME business development. After a career spanning 30 years, she knows a thing or two about successfully running a business! Through combining a career in the education sector while also working in business development, Geraldine merges research-led critical thinking and academic rigour with a solid focus on practical application. She has worked with a range of business support organisations to assist their clients at the start-up and development stages of their businesses. These organisations include the Local Enterprise Offices, SOLAS, ETBs, Skillnet Networks, the Small Firms Association, NovaUCD and TCD Tangent. She is also involved in a range of SME and education policy initiatives, most recently the revision of the Leaving Certificate Business Studies curriculum and the OECD Training Strategy Review of Ireland.

Online Scammers Are More Sophisticated Than Ever

Nuisance communications, often euphemistically referred to as scams, have surged in prevalence, becoming an increasingly troublesome issue. These deceptive messages range from fake texts to fraudulent investment schemes, posing a considerable inconvenience at best and severe financial harm at worst to unsuspecting individuals. Cybercriminals thrive on exploiting even a small number of victims to reap substantial gains. Recent research conducted by ComReg estimates that nuisance communications cost individuals and businesses in Ireland over €300 million annually, with a staggering 365,000 fraudulent scam cases reported in a year. As these scams grow more sophisticated, banks and individuals alike face a mounting challenge in safeguarding against them. This article delves into the evolving landscape of scams, the methods employed by fraudsters, and the technological advancements shaping the battle against these malicious communications.
