June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the diversity, resilience and contributions of our LGBTQIA+ communities and consider what inclusion looks like in your business.
LGBTQIA+ is an umbrella acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual. The “+” represents various other sexual orientations and gender identities, making sure the community remains inclusive and welcoming to all.
Small and meaningful steps can make a SIGNIFICANT positive difference in creating a respectful and welcoming environment in and around your business.
Here are some tips to get you started:
- review all your policies to ensure they are inclusive of LGBTQIA+ employees, clients & customers and suppliers.
- use inclusive language, including the preferred names and pronouns
- undertake and support LGBTQIA+ awareness training
- participate in key events, local and regional
- work with LGBTQIA+ organisations to support communities
- display posters, flags, or other materials and make sure you understand what this means, and your support is genuinely reflected through your actions.
Building an inclusive business isn’t simply good practice, it helps strengthen your team, support wellbeing and build trust with your community.
