2025 has brought significant change for Irish small businesses, testing resilience like never before. Rising input costs, tighter margins, supply-chain challenges and shifting consumer behaviours have all taken their toll. Yet, as we close out the year, we are seeing modest improvements and a welcome sense of cautious optimism. While small businesses are still spending plenty of time in their business, tending to day-to-day matters, the optimism has signalled a move from reactive to proactive thinking.
More SME owners and managers are beginning to carve out time to work on their business rather than only in it – thinking strategically about opportunities for growth, innovation and long-term sustainability. Many are exploring new market avenues, whether expanding online, entering export markets or diversifying product lines. It’s clear that small businesses are looking beyond their traditional customer base and positioning themselves for the future.
Across our Bridge Enterprise Centres (BEC) and DLR West Business Association (DLRWBA), members tell us that technology and AI are front of mind. SMEs want to know how digital tools can help them do more with less, automate routine tasks and create more personalised customer experiences. At the same time, many feel overwhelmed about where to begin.
We understand that small businesses are built on trust and relationships. Technology can support – but never replace – the human connection, customer experience and judgement at the heart of every successful enterprise. Our role at BEC and DLRWBA is to demystify technology, offer practical guidance and ensure that adoption strengthens rather than complicates your business.
A Request
If we could ask one thing of SME and family-business owners this year, it is this: take care of yourself. Plan a break. Step back to recharge, reflect and re-energise. Use the end-of-year time to set the tone for 2026.

- Where do you want your business to be in three, five or ten years?
- And how can BEC or DLRWBA support you on that journey?
