sales

This week, DLRWBA hosted an engaging business event focused on one of the most critical drivers of success: sales. Led by sales expert Sean Beirne, the session brought together entrepreneurs, founders, and business professionals for an afternoon of learning, discussion, and meaningful networking.

We were also delighted to welcome representatives from our new sponsor and member Heritage Credit Union, who joined us on the day and kindly brought along gifts for attendees. Their support will help make our Second Tuesday events even more valuable for everyone involved.

Whether you attended or couldn’t make it, here’s a recap of the key insights and why events like this continue to play such an important role in supporting local business growth.

The Power of In-Person Networking

One of the biggest themes from the event was the value of meeting face-to-face. While digital tools make it easier than ever to connect online, nothing replaces the impact of real conversations with people who understand the challenges of running and growing a business.

We received fantastic feedback on our new venue – the newly renovated conference room at Bridge Enterprise Centres. Attendees praised the bright, modern space and improved event set-up, with many highlighting the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

The extended networking time was particularly appreciated, giving businesses more opportunity to introduce themselves, showcase their services, and build genuine relationships. It was especially exciting to welcome new members to the community and see fresh connections forming throughout the session. Many attendees commented that meaningful business opportunities and partnerships were already being discussed – proof that great deals really can start over a coffee.

Why Sales Is the Engine of Growth

Sean’s talk focused on a simple but powerful truth: sales is the engine that drives business growth. Without a strong and consistent sales process, even the best products and services struggle to gain traction.

Here are some of the standout takeaways from the session.

1. Clearly Communicate Your Value Proposition

Many businesses find it difficult to clearly explain what makes them different. Yet your value proposition is the foundation of every sales conversation.

Ask yourself:

What problem do you solve?
Who do you help?
Why should customers choose you instead of competitors?

When your message is clear and confident, customers understand the benefit of working with you much faster. If you’d like to refine your messaging, the HubSpot value proposition guide
is a helpful starting point.

2. Use a CRM to Manage Your Sales Pipeline

Another major takeaway was the importance of using a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system to stay organised and proactive.

A CRM helps you:

Track leads and opportunities
Manage follow-ups
Maintain up-to-date customer information
Gain visibility over your sales pipeline

Without a system in place, opportunities can easily slip through the cracks. With one, you can build consistent, repeatable sales processes that scale as your business grows.

3. Build Relationships Through Local Business Communities

A key highlight of the event was the value of community networking. The DLR West Business Association continues to provide a powerful platform for businesses to connect, collaborate, and generate referrals.

Strong local networks can:

Introduce you to new customers
Provide trusted referrals
Create partnership opportunities
Offer peer support and shared learning

For many businesses, community relationships become one of their most reliable sources of new opportunities. If you are not a member, become a member here.

Celebrating Your Professional Brand

In addition to the learning and networking, attendees also had the opportunity to get professional headshots taken by photographer and fellow DLRWBA member, Gerry from KB Photo. A strong professional image plays a big role in personal branding, LinkedIn profiles, and marketing materials, so we’re excited for everyone to receive their finished photos soon.

Why Events Like This Matter

The energy in the room reinforced something we strongly believe: when business owners come together to share ideas and experiences, everyone benefits. From new partnerships to fresh sales strategies, these gatherings create momentum that lasts well beyond the event itself.

If you found these insights valuable, our next Lunch & Learn networking session will dive even deeper into practical sales strategy. Our SME Owners’ Series kicks off at lunch time on May 28th where Mark Fielding will present “Sales Secrets: Pricing for Profit”. Seats are limited – Book your place here.

Sales growth doesn’t happen by accident – it happens through learning, connection, and consistent action.
