Growing your business is exciting – it means your product or service is gaining traction, and your market is responding. But with growth comes the need to scale your team. Hiring too soon can be costly, but hiring too late can cause burnout, missed opportunities, and poor customer experience. So how do you know when it’s time to hire, and more importantly, how do you get it right?
Know When It’s Time to Hire
A good indicator that it’s time to expand your team is when you or your existing team are constantly stretched, and essential work is being delayed or compromised. You may notice:
- Customer complaints increasing
- Missed deadlines or project delays
- A backlog of admin or operational tasks
- Lost sales because you don’t have the capacity to deliver
- Key staff becoming disengaged or burnt out
If you’re spending too much time in the business and not enough on the business, then that’s a flashing red light.
Hiring should also be strategic. Ask yourself:
- What work needs to be done that no one currently has the skill or time to do?
- Will hiring now help us grow revenue or improve efficiency within six months?
- Do I have the systems and supports in place to onboard someone effectively?
Start with a Clear Role Description
Before you even advertise the role, take time to define it properly. This isn’t just a job title – it’s a roadmap for success. A clear role description should include:
- Purpose of the role: Why does this role exist?
- Key responsibilities: What are the day-to-day tasks?
- Skills and qualifications: What does someone need to succeed?
- Reporting structure: Who do they report to, and who do they collaborate with?
- Measures of success: What does good look like after three and six months?
Clarity is kind to both you and your future hire. It helps you attract the right candidates and provides a clear benchmark for performance once they’re on board.
Get HR Advice Early
Too often, small businesses skip HR until there’s a problem. But getting HR support early can help you:
- Ensure compliance with Irish employment laws
- Design an effective onboarding process
- Put the right policies and contracts in place
- Avoid costly HR mistakes down the line
Outsourced HR support can be a cost-effective way to get this expertise without having to hire in-house. Look for advisors who understand your sector and can tailor support to your growth stage.
Train Your Team
It’s one thing to hire – it’s another to manage effectively. As your team grows, your role changes too. You move from doing to leading. That shift can be challenging.
If you’re promoting someone internally or stepping into management yourself, training in leadership, performance management, and communication is essential. A great employee doesn’t automatically make a great manager and they’ll need support to succeed.
Think Long-Term
Hiring is not a short-term fix – it’s a long-term investment. Each new team member impacts your company culture, your operational structure, and your growth potential. So, think beyond today’s workload.
- Will this hire still be valuable in 12 months?
- Are you building the right structure for scale?
- Can this person grow with the business?
You want to build a team that’s agile, aligned, and capable of taking your business to the next level.
In Summary
Hiring is a sign of business health – but it’s not something to rush into. Taking the time to create a strong role description, get early HR advice, and tap into training supports means you’re far more likely to make the right hire.
