This morning, we hosted our final Second-Tuesday Event of 2025 at the Omniplex Cinema, Nutgrove Shopping Centre, where local business owners gathered for an informative and highly practical session with Sergeant James Malone, Crime Prevention Officer with An Garda Síochána.
Today’s session focused on the increasing challenges facing small and medium-sized businesses, both in-store and online – and offered clear, actionable advice on how to protect staff, premises, stock, and even steps to take at home.
Sgt. Malone discussed the latest tactics that shoplifters and organised retail crime groups are using in 2025, including distraction techniques and grab and go trends. He also emphasised the value of clear procedures, and installing well-positioned, good quality CCTV to help deter internal and external theft.
A core part of the conversation focused on the importance of reporting any sort of crime your business comes into contact with. Sgt. Malone explained how An Garda Síochána are increasing visibility in local areas, particularly around retail zones and business parks, as part of their proactive prevention strategy.
This increased presence aims to deter crime before it happens and hopefully strengthen confidence among business owners.
