This morning, we hosted a valuable Social Media Clinic with Melanie Boylan from Stomp Social Media Training, giving members practical guidance on how to strengthen their online presence and make social media work harder for their business.
For many SMEs, social media can feel like another task on an already full list. What made this session so useful was its focus on practical actions that business owners can apply straight away.
One of the key messages from the session was the importance of setting goals with a simple 4-week plan. Rather than trying to do everything at once, Melanie encouraged attendees to focus on manageable, short-term actions that can be reviewed and improved over time. This approach helps create momentum without adding unnecessary pressure.
Another important reminder was that social media should not exist on its own. Businesses also need an updatable website that reflects what they do clearly and gives people somewhere reliable to go after finding them online. A strong website supports credibility and helps turn interest into action.
Melanie also shared the 4 Cs of social media:
- Connection
- Credibility
- Collaboration
- Community
These four areas provide a helpful framework for businesses that want to build a stronger and more effective online presence. Social media is not simply about posting content. It is about building trust, staying visible and creating genuine relationships over time.
A particularly helpful part of the clinic was Melanie’s review of each member’s Google Business Profile, where she suggested practical updates and improvements. This was a strong reminder that online visibility is about more than social platforms alone. Your wider digital presence also needs to be accurate, active and clear.
Time management also came through as a major theme. Attendees were encouraged to track how much time they are spending on social media tasks, look at what is producing useful engagement, and avoid wasting energy on activity that is not delivering value. Using schedulers was highlighted as a useful way to stay consistent and reduce pressure.
Another smart takeaway was the importance of tracking good interactions. Understanding what posts, comments or conversations are getting the best response can help businesses make better decisions about future content.
Finally, Melanie stressed that your call to action should be at the top of your post. If you want people to take the next step, whether that is booking, buying, reading or getting in touch, it should be clear from the start.
For anyone who would like to keep learning from Melanie’s approach, her podcast, The Monday Morning Marketing Podcast, is another useful resource for practical marketing insights.
We would like to thank Melanie Boylan for sharing such practical and encouraging advice with our members this morning. Sessions like this are a great example of how clear, consistent action can help SMEs strengthen their visibility and support business growth.
