Today we were joined by Mary Fleming Design for our latest free webinar. We explored a topic that matters to every small business owner: your competitive advantage. Many businesses assume they need something dramatic or completely different to stand out. In reality, the advantage that matters most is often already there. It just has not been clearly defined, communicated, or valued enough.

One of the strongest points discussed during the session was that many businesses overlook the strengths their customers already appreciate. Some attendees shared that their advantage comes from their personal service and genuine care. Others highlighted their qualifications, industry expertise, and willingness to go above and beyond what is expected. These are not small things. They are often the very reasons customers choose one business over another and stay loyal over time.

We also looked at the importance of being clear about what you are known for, how you do it, and what you do. To help define that more clearly, we broke it down into five key areas:

  1. Your expertise – the knowledge and skills you bring.
  2. Your specialisation – the niche or area you focus on.
  3. Your approach – how you work with customers and deliver results.
  4. Your experience – the track record and lessons built over time.
  5. Your values – what matters to you and how that shapes your business.

When these five areas are clearly understood, it becomes much easier to see what sets your business apart.

Another key takeaway from the webinar was this: if you do something differently from your competitors, that difference may well be your advantage. The important question is whether that difference matters to your ideal customer. A competitive advantage is not just about what makes your business unique. It is about what makes your business more valuable, more relevant, or more trusted in the eyes of the people you want to reach.

If you missed the live session, or would like to revisit the discussion, we will share the webinar recording below so you can watch it back and reflect on where your own business advantage truly lies.
