Yesterday we marked DLR West Business Association’s first anniversary in Marlay House with a brilliant Showcase Event that brought together local business owners, entrepreneurs, policymakers and community leaders.
Hosted by broadcaster and comedian Alan Shortt, the event created space for honest conversation about what is happening on the ground for Irish SMEs right now, from rising costs and policy pressures to the opportunities that still lie ahead.
The speaker line-up included Cathaoirleach Cllr Barry Saul, Minister Neale Richmond TD, economist Jim Power and DLRWBA Chairperson Mark Fielding, with each speaker highlighting just how important small and micro-businesses are to Ireland’s economy and to local communities.
A real conversation about the SME landscape
Economist Jim Power gave a thoughtful keynote, describing today’s global climate as one of the most geopolitically uncertain periods in recent years. Even with that uncertainty, his message was clear: Irish businesses continue to show real resilience, adaptability and determination.
He also spoke about the growing cost pressures facing businesses and the need for practical balance. While measures such as pension auto-enrolment and the Living Wage are well intentioned, he stressed that extra obligations need to be matched with meaningful supports for businesses already carrying a lot.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Barry Saul brought a personal perspective to the discussion, reflecting on his own experience of growing up in a family business. He spoke about the many hats business owners wear every day and the constant challenges involved in keeping a business moving forward. His message reinforced the value of local authorities and Government working together to support enterprise, because when businesses thrive, communities thrive too.
Minister Neale Richmond TD echoed that point, noting how important SMEs are to Ireland’s economic success. He welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with local business owners through organisations like DLRWBA and highlighted how valuable those conversations are in helping Government better understand the everyday realities facing entrepreneurs.
Questions, insights and honest discussion
A lively Q&A followed Jim Power’s keynote, with attendees raising important issues affecting businesses across the region. Topics included staff accommodation supports, tax incentives, the future of Ireland’s film industry incentives and the role of data centres in the wider economy.
It was a strong reminder that local business events matter because they give people the chance to ask direct questions, share concerns and contribute to bigger conversations that can help shape policy.
A strong first year for DLRWBA
Closing the event, DLRWBA Chairperson Mark Fielding reflected on what the association has achieved in its first year, including the delivery of 40 business support events since launch.
He also recognised the support that helped make that progress possible. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Economic Development Department was acknowledged for its backing during DLRWBA’s inaugural year, while Bridge Enterprise Centres was recognised as a key driving force behind the association’s growth and success.
That support has helped create a strong platform for local businesses to connect, collaborate and access practical supports that make a real difference.
Mark also thanked Heritage Credit Union, sponsor of DLRWBA’s Second Tuesday events, for its continued support.
Celebrating the local business community
More than anything, the event highlighted the strength of the business community across DLR West, including Nutgrove, Churchtown and Ballinteer.
It also reinforced something worth repeating: when local enterprise is supported, whole communities benefit. Business owners, entrepreneurs and small firms continue to drive employment, investment and economic activity across the region, and events like this help keep that momentum going.
As DLRWBA moves into its second year, this Showcase Event was a positive reflection of what has already been achieved and a strong sign of what is still to come.
