St Kieran’s National School

At St Kieran’s National School, pupils took learning beyond the textbook. Through their Curious Minds: Discover STEM project for 2025/26, they explored science, technology, engineering and maths through hands-on discovery. Questions led to experiments, while everyday surroundings offered starting points for investigation.

Across the classroom and school grounds, children had opportunities to test ideas and follow their curiosity. The project connected lessons with experiences they could observe, measure and share.

Discovering life up close

Fifth and sixth class pupils incubated Silkie and Polish eggs and studied the chicks. Elsewhere in the project, children observed tadpoles developing into frogs and explored the butterfly life cycle. These encounters brought the study of living things into their daily learning.

Outdoors, pupils investigated how worms and woodlice turn kitchen and garden waste into compost. By weighing the waste and recording findings, they combined environmental care with practical maths. Growing vegetables and working with a horticulturist from Festina Lente extended that connection between science and the school garden.

Turning ideas into practical projects

Engineering challenges gave pupils another way to explore how things work. Building and testing catapults connected their designs with lessons about forces. Coding club offered a different setting for problem-solving, while BeeBots introduced pupils to small programmable robots.

Sharing formed an important part of the learning too. St Kieran’s hosted its own science fair and invited St Peter’s NS to coding club. Both activities gave children opportunities to connect with others through their discoveries.

Supporting learning in the community

Bridge Enterprise Centres contributed endowment funding to help with the project. Pupils and teachers brought the programme to life through practical exploration, from observing nature to designing and testing their own creations.

Bridge EC are proud to be supporting school and community projects – helping young people explore their interests, develop new skills and contribute to the communities they call home.
